About Bernie

Bernie was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Arlington, Virginia. He is the product of the local public school system. After high school, Bernie attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and then Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In 1973, Bernie married Beth Belanger. They have four adult children and eleven grandchildren residing in Virginia, Delaware and California. 

After graduating from law school in 1976, Bernie returned to Northern Virginia, where he was employed by the Federal Trade Commission. His work there primarily involved the enforcement of federal consumer protection laws.

In 1980, Bernie joined his father's general practice law firm. This firm, which eventually came to be known as Fensterwald & Alcorn, specialized in litigation under open government laws, principally the Freedom of Information Act, for which the firm was especially known. His practice also included the representation of small businesses, including self storage companies, as well as wills, trusts and estates and real estate. 

He has been consistently rated AV by the prestigious Martindale Hubbell legal rating firm. He belongs to the bars of Virginia (inactive), the District of Columbia (inactive) and Maryland.

Bernie also served for five years as an Attorney-Member of the Fairfax County Board of Equalization that hears real estate tax assessment appeals. 

In 1999, Bernie left full time law practice to pursue a M. Ed. in school counseling from Virginia Tech, which he received in 2002. Thereafter, Bernie worked as a K-12 school counselor in public schools in Virginia. 

Bernie has also, since 1991, co-managed a family owned and operated self storage company with nine facilities in Florida, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. He is a Past President of the Washington Area Self Storage Association (WASSA)

Bernie and Beth are parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Community in Dunedin. 

Bernie is a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity.
